Speaker
Prof. Jian Zuo School of Architecture and Civil Engineering, University of Adelaide, Adelaide, SA, Australia.
Dr. Jian Zuo is a Professor in Sustainable Construction at the School of Architecture and Civil Engineering, The University of Adelaide. His main research interests are related to health and sustainable built environment via both technical (e.g., smart technologies) and managerial (e.g., policy intervention and behavioural change) means.
In particular, he has undertaken extensive research on health and safety issues in the construction industry at both micro and macro levels. These include general dust, silica dust and Particulate Matter emissions derived from construction activities; and air pollution issues derived from manufacturing of construction materials.
As the lead researcher, he has been part of team to deliver significant outcomes in a series of competitive grants in Australia such as Industrial Transformation Training Centre, Discovery Projects and Linkage Projects funded by the Australian Research Council as well as many other national key projects (e.g. Natural Hazards Research Australia, NCCARF Climate Change Adaptation Research Grants, Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute).
He has long been engaged in the study of ecological towns, green buildings and sustainable development of the construction industry. He has published more than 100 papers in top journals, including more than 80 journal papers indexed by SCI and SSCI, Google Scholar indexed more than 31,000, and the H-index is 95. Twelve papers are listed as hot papers/highly cited papers by Incites Essential Science Indicators (ESI).
Host
Prof. Yantao Yu Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong, China.
Prof. Yantao Yu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the director of the Human-Centered Intelligent Construction Lab. She is a multidisciplinary researcher focusing on the application of information technologies in construction. Her research interests include construction robots, construction safety, and digital twin techniques. She has published over 50 academic papers, including over 30 JCR Q1 papers. Her research achievements have been recognized by the academic and industry communities, including the Best Paper Award at the 35th International Conference on Building Automation, the Best Research Project Award from the Hong Kong Occupational Safety and Health Council, the Best Paper Award from the Hong Kong Institute of Construction, and the Outstanding Paper Award at the 1st National BIM Academic Conference. Her research has been funded by RGC, NSCF, ITC, PPR, and industrial partners.
Introduction
Solid waste presents a significant challenge to sustainable development due to its significant environmental, social and economic impacts. This is an emerging issue all over the world. Policies play a crucial role in solid waste management. This seminar will use Australia as a case study to illustrate how policies related to solid waste such as laws, acts and regulations, as well as company level initiatives. Meanwhile, the mechanism that policies facilitate sustainable management of solid waste will be explored. This offers useful references to other countries and regions as well.
