Special Issue Information

This Special Issue, Metal-Based Composites for Biomedical and Functional Applications, aims to showcase recent advances in the design, processing, characterization, and application of metal-based composite systems tailored for healthcare and high-performance functional devices. We invite original research articles, reviews, and perspectives that address the development of metal–ceramic, metal–polymer, and multi-phase metallic composites with enhanced mechanical performance, corrosion resistance, bioactivity, and multifunctionality. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, metal-based composites for orthopedic, dental, and cardiovascular implants; biodegradable and bioresorbable metallic systems; surface-engineered and gradient composites for controlled biological responses; and metal-based composites integrated into sensors, actuators, and smart or wearable/implantable devices. Contributions exploring microstructure–property–function relationships, interfacial mechanics, fatigue and wear behavior in physiological or complex service environments, as well as advanced fabrication strategies such as additive manufacturing, severe plastic deformation, and hybrid processing routes, are particularly encouraged. Studies that combine experimental approaches with modeling, simulation, or data-driven methods (e.g., machine learning–assisted design and optimization) to accelerate the translation of metal-based composites from laboratory to clinic or industry are highly welcome. Through this Special Issue in BME Horizon, we seek to provide a comprehensive platform for cutting-edge research on metal-based composites, promote innovative solutions for biomedical and functional applications, and foster interdisciplinary collaboration among materials scientists, biomedical engineers, clinicians, and device designers.
