Special Issue Information
The sustainable development of the built environment relies on responsible resource use, innovative materials, and circular design strategies. This Special Issue, organized in collaboration with the 2025 International Conference on Resource Sustainability (icRS 2025) held at the University of Adelaide, Australia, invites contributions that address critical challenges and emerging solutions in construction-related resource sustainability and circular economy applications.
We invite a wide range of contributions on topics such as resource-efficient construction, sustainable and low-carbon materials, circular economy strategies, and digital innovations that support resource optimization across the building lifecycle. Submissions should align with the scope of Journal of Building Design and Environment and will undergo standard peer review.
Key topics include but are not limited to:
• Resource-efficient building design and construction
• Circular economy strategies in the built environment
• Design for disassembly and material reuse
• Recycling and upcycling of construction and demolition waste
• Sustainable and low-carbon building materials
• Bio-based and recycled construction materials
• Modular and prefabricated construction systems
• Life cycle assessment (LCA) and embodied carbon analysis
• Digital tools for material and energy optimization (e.g., BIM, digital twins)
• AI and smart technologies for resource management
• Renewable energy integration in buildings
• Nature-based solutions and green infrastructure
• Innovations in sustainable construction practices and systems
While featuring selected papers from the 2025 International Conference on Resource Sustainability (icRS 2025), this Special Issue also welcomes high-quality contributions from the broader research community.
