SMD Research Featured by Tech Briefs: Insect-Inspired Material Harnesses Resonance for Soft Robotics

A recent research article published in Smart Materials and Devices (SMD), entitled  "Strain amplification from within: Harnessing programmable intrinsic resonance in dielectric elastomers driven by space charge mechanism," has received international media attention and was recently featured by Tech Briefs.

The study, conducted by Chenkai Zhang, Chengcheng Zhang, Binjie Jin, and Tao Xie, reports a new class of space charge-driven dielectric elastomers (SC-DEs) that harness intrinsic resonance to amplify mechanical deformation. Inspired by the efficient use of resonance in insect flight, the researchers developed a material-level strategy that enables large-amplitude motion at relatively low electric fields without relying on the rigid supporting frames or pre-strain commonly required in conventional dielectric elastomer systems.

The study further demonstrates the potential of these materials for lightweight and programmable soft actuators and robotic systems. An artificial dragonfly was developed as a proof-of-concept demonstration, highlighting the potential of intrinsic resonance for achieving efficient motion in soft robotic systems. The research team is continuing to explore improvements in resonance control, mechanical output, long-term cycling stability, and system integration.

Following the publication of the study in SMD, Tech Briefs featured the research in an article entitled “A New Insect-Inspired Material Harnesses Resonance for Soft Robots.” The publication also invited corresponding author Dr. Binjie Jin of South China University of Technology to share further insights into the research and its future development.
