Special Issue Information

The construction industry faces severe challenges from global climate change, with sustainable buildings driving its transformation. Low-carbon emission-reduction materials, as key innovations, reshape building lifecycles in design, construction, and operation. They reduce carbon emissions while improving durability, energy efficiency, and environmental compatibility. With rising focus on “carbon neutrality,” developing these materials is urgent. Examples include bio-based materials, renewable composites, and carbon-capture integrations replacing high-carbon options, advancing green evolution. Advanced approaches like nanotechnology, circular economy principles, and lifecycle assessments optimize them, cutting energy use and greenhouse gases.

This Special Issue (SI) aims to present the latest research in low-carbon materials for sustainable buildings, covering development, optimization, and applications of alternatives like cement substitutes, green insulation, and low-carbon concrete. It explores integration into structures, including intelligent systems, passive designs, and zero-carbon solutions. The SI also addresses lifecycle management, environmental assessments, and policies/standards for climate challenges.

As urbanization and sustainable goals advance, low-carbon materials' importance grows. This SI provides insights for academia, industry, and policymakers, promoting collaboration and innovation in sustainable practices. By compiling global findings, it supports the industry's low-carbon shift and global sustainable development goals.
