Special Issue Information

The convergence of advanced materials, fiber engineering, and intelligent systems is rapidly transforming textiles from passive substrates into active, adaptive, and multifunctional platforms. Recent breakthroughs in functional fibers and yarns, capable of sensing, energy harvesting, and stimuli-responsive behavior, are enabling intelligence to be embedded directly at the material level. When combined with programmable and architected textile structures, multiscale manufacturing strategies, and seamless fiber-to-textile integration, these advances are unlocking new possibilities for scalable, deformable, and highly integrated textile systems.

Building on these foundations, intelligent textiles are evolving toward fully integrated wearable platforms with capabilities in sensing, actuation, energy management, and real-time data processing. Emerging directions, including AI-enabled and data-driven textiles, neuromorphic and self-learning systems, and sustainable, reconfigurable fiber–textile architectures, are further accelerating this transition from “smart” to truly intelligent and adaptive systems.

This Special Issue aims to capture these frontiers by bringing together contributions spanning functional fibers, advanced textile architectures, integrated systems, and transformative applications, with a focus on scalability, interdisciplinary innovation, and real-world impact.
