Special Issue Information

Learning from nature provides a transformative force for next-generation smart materials. Bioinspired artificial muscles and intelligent soft machines replicate the flexibility, cyclic stability, and self-adaptability of biological systems through precise structural design and molecular engineering of polymers. These smart materials, ranging from artificial spider silk, elastomers, hydrogels, and other soft matter, exhibit programmable actuation properties in response to external stimuli. By integrating multi-scale structures with bionic topological design, they enable the promising applications in artificial muscles, wearable devices, haptic interfaces, soft robots, and other intelligent soft machines.

This Special Issue endeavors to highlight cutting-edge advances in bioinspired artificial muscles and intelligent soft machines, spanning from the fundamental soft matter innovation to systems integration application, with an emphasis on uncovering the deep understanding and new opportunities in polymer materials and intelligent devices. This focused section will cover a broad spectrum of topics, including but not limited to:
• Advanced synthesis and structural design of bioinspired artificial muscles.
• Innovative characterization techniques and mechanism investigations for bioinspired artificial muscles and intelligent soft machines.
• Novel applications in medical rehabilitation devices, tailored soft robots, and smart actuators.
• Continuous scalable fabrication and industrialization of soft intelligent systems.
• Theoretical calculation for smart materials, including molecular dynamics, density functional theory, and finite element analysis.
